Most ideas don't fail on quality. They fail in translation.

The three situations NodeMode is built for, and how engagements actually run.

Three situations we're built for

Entering Japan

Your strategy, product, or campaign won't transfer cleanly. Japan is not a translation problem; it's a trust, behavior, and category-convention problem.

Rebuilding relevance in Japan

You're in the market but the localization got generic, the teams drifted apart, and the work lost its edge.

Taking Japanese ideas outward

Domestic power, international ambition. Positioning and creative that travels without sounding translated.

How NodeMode works

Every engagement is senior-led. NodeMode assembles the right strategists, creatives, producers, cultural specialists, and market partners around the problem.

The right team, built around the problem

Not a permanent agency. Not a marketplace. A curated network of senior specialists, assembled per assignment and led directly.

Cross-cultural judgment, proven on the work

Trust-ladder strategy, talent and casting judgment, category-convention fluency. Every claim links to a case that shows it.

I don't build campaigns for awards. I build them to change behavior.

What People Say

Norio is a must have.

I've known and worked with Norio for almost 2 years while at Razorfish. I have always been impressed with the unwavering dedication, amazing creativity, and unmatched instincts he brings to his teams, projects, clients and our industry.

He was a reliable leader of multiple large scale assignments for our main client, T-Mobile. His range of deliverables were both in advertising and product design.

Norio is also a strong mentor, and natural leader with his team. I am hoping to work with Norio again in the future.

Paul Cooper: Principal Creative Director, Microsoft Corporation

I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with Norio-san during his days at TikTok. He is a great team player who guides his colleagues along and is not afraid to try new things and excel.

Every time I had to pitch to clients with innovative creative ideas, he supported me with pleasure and the creative ideas/quality of the deck are always more than expected in a short period of time, which I really, really appreciate even now.

Besides, Norio-san is a very nice guy with a kind heart, and always ready to help when needed. It was a pleasure to work with such an amazing and proactive person, and definitely the one you would dream to have on your team. Thank you so much!

Noah Sato: Client Partner, TikTok

I've had the great pleasure of working with Norio on several projects and I hope to be able to do so many times again. He is a hard worker with an amazing eye for design and he over-delivers on time, every time. He demonstrates a very diverse skill set, leadership abilities and is a great mentor to the younger folks in the crew. Thumbs up!

Common questions

What does NodeMode actually do?
NodeMode finds where an idea breaks when it crosses between global and Japanese markets, then rebuilds it so it works in market without losing what made it powerful. Three situations: entering Japan, rebuilding relevance in a market you are already in, and taking Japanese ideas outward. The work spans cultural diagnosis, cross-market strategy, creative development, production leadership, and embedded creative leadership.
When would I use NodeMode instead of a local agency?
When the problem is that the idea itself will not transfer, rather than that you need it produced. Japan is not a translation problem; it is a trust, behavior, and category-convention problem. Every engagement is senior-led, and NodeMode is not a permanent agency or a marketplace: it is a curated network of senior specialists assembled per assignment and led directly, so you are not paying for a structure you do not need.
How long does an engagement run?
The full arc is roughly six months: diagnostic in weeks one to two, strategy rebuild in weeks three to six, execution partnership across months two to four, and launch support in months five and six. Shorter engagements are possible when the question is narrower, and the diagnostic can stand on its own.
Do you hand over a strategy, or stay through execution?
Stay. Most consultants give you a report and disappear; this embeds with your team for three to six months. Embedding means being in your Slack channels, on your strategy calls, reviewing creative decks, sitting in on talent negotiations, and rewriting briefs when they will fail in the target market. It is not a cultural audit that ends in PowerPoint, and not safe recommendations designed for consensus.
Can you work in Japanese and English?
Both, natively. NodeMode was founded by Norio Ichikawa (市川典男), Tokyo-born and West Coast-raised, who has led work on both sides of the Pacific for twenty years and writes and decides in either language. That matters most in the room where a global headquarters and a Japanese team have to agree on the same idea.
What is the first step?
A diagnostic. One to two weeks identifying exactly where the idea breaks when it crosses the market: trust barriers, category conventions, talent risk. It is deliberately small, it stands on its own, and it tells you whether the rest is worth doing before any budget is committed.
